If you follow me on Facebook or Instagram, then you have seen me share pics on me destroying my Bible. Yes, I’m taking pleasure in writing in my Bible, wait no coloring in my Bible and drawing and painting and stamping and gluing and anything else that I can think of!
Would your mother faint if she saw my Bible in all of it’s worshipful glory?
Good it’s for God not her!
Shanna Noel, you can check out her blog here, started this little thing called the Journaling Bible Community on Facebook and it’s spreading like wildfire. It’s a group sharing their art inspired by God’s Word. Most of it is in their journaling Bibles but some in journals too. It has changed my spiritual life and my Facebook wall feed!
Here are some resources to help you get started destroying your Bible on your #JournalingBibleCommunity
First grab a Bible
I have this one. But you can use any Bible! Don’t feel like you have to go buy a new Bible. Now I seem to have a thing for Bibles. I have a lot of them but I got this one for my new craft, but marking up my Bible isn’t something new to me, I’ve been doing it for years, just not destroying it by making art.
Now grab a pen.
THAT’s ALL YOU NEED
You can get some supplies like pens, makers, crayons, watercolors, ink stamps etc.
Think kids art supplies, it doesn’t have to cost a ton.
I have lots of scrapbooking supplies from years of crafting. Hobby Lobby is one place my husband doesn’t like for me to visit because I come home with BAGS of stuff. PLEASE don’t get sucked into thinking you need this stuff to start this journey of Bible Journaling, YOU DON’T in fact I haven’t bought a thing since I started! You could go by a 99 cent box of crayons or colored pencils and be set. Really all you need is a Bible and a pen!
Here are some things I used on my first page. They were all stuff I already had.
Tombow Dual Tip Markers in #076 & #451
Stampabilities Pigment Ink in Light Pink and Pastel Yellow
Bic Stick Grip Pens in blue and green
American Crafts Thickers Stickers Goodness in Pink
Becky Higgins Project Life Pens .05
Mister Huey Color Misters in Garen, Bazinga, Desert, Opaque White
Heidi Swapp Color Shine in Primrose
Here are some things I would like to get:
Writing in the Margins: Connecting with God on the Pages of Your Bible.
Now this book I might get also, it looks fun and can help with lettering The Art of Whimsical Lettering
This book looks fun too! Zenspirations Dangle Designs
This set is on sell for pretty cheap Darice 120-Piece Deluxe Art Set
Or some fun pens like these Fiskars Gel Pen 48-Piece Value Set
ACCU-Gel Highlighters Study Kit
Micron Inductive Bible Study Kit
While it’s fun to get supplies for our Bible it isn’t the point, what matters is that we are spending time with our God and His Word. You could start this today by just getting you Bible and opening it up and start reading!
I hope this inspires you to spend more time in God’s word.
The gel highlighters are pretty nice, but they can be a little waxy and smear a little. But still a nice way to add color without bleeding. The whimsical lettering book is awesome! You might be able to get a digital edition cheaper or for free through your local library. It’s awesome to have a sister in Christ with similar passions. Keep on destroying it!
getting started myself. i actually ordered this same Bible early this morning 🙂
I really would like to know where to purchase the ESV Bible with wide margins. and how thick are the pages?
frixion also makes erasable highlighters!! I love mine (mostly to erase that unsightly place at the end where I pick my highlighter up from the page)! You can order them on Amazon. They don’t bleed through thin bible pages and come in 5 colors! Just wanted to share. Blessings!

Joanne Sharpe’s online course in lettering is fantabulous! i learned all my lettering there. she is fantastice. I have the zentangle book…it is very unique (straight tangle and going down) – you will love the possiblities! Thanks for all the suggestions of supplies! x
I’m following Stephanie Ackerman’s Documented Faith. She began it in 2015 and is continuing it this year! She’s sends weekly scriptures to focus on, sometimes prompts or devotions. I’m in the process of making my Documented Faith-binder at the moment and am joining Kathy Racoosin’s 30-day coloring challenge so that I can color in some coloring pages as fronts for my dividers. One thing I would recommend here too is a white-out pen. You don’t know how many mistakes I’ve made recently. Oh boy! By the way, I’m a retired homeschool mom of one miracle child.
I’m really so excited to get started….what a lovely way to dig into the bible!🎨😊💓
